AIKEN, S.C. – Aiken Public Safety is looking for one of the men they say held up the Burger King on York Street. They already have two suspects in custody. Another is dead after investigators say he took his own life.
Investigators say the four men walked into the restaurant Saturday and ordered the employees and customers into the cooler. The men then ordered the manager to open the safe and the registers and took the money.
When officers got to the scene they arrested one suspect who was attempting to run away.
A second suspect was arrested after he broke into a home shortly after the armed robbery.
Officers found another suspect, Richard Lee Simmons, in a field. According to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, when officers approached Simmons, he shot himself.
Aiken Public Safety is still searching for the fourth suspect involved in the armed robbery. Investigators say after the robbery he carjacked a victim cleaning his car at a nearby carwash. He ordered the man to drive him to Hampton Avenue where he let the man go and fled on foot.
Sean Rodriguez and Robert Mills are the two suspects in custody. Both will be charged with armed robbery and several counts of kidnapping.
North Aiken Elementary School was put on lockdown for a short time when officials learned about the nearby robbery. The school was putting on a carnival for students and families.
