AUGUSTA, Ga. – “Pull 'em up and cover up!”
That is likely to be the new rule since the Richmond County Student Services Committee outlawed sagging pants and revealing outfits Tuesday night.
After months of discussing it, the committee voted to enact a new dress code policy affecting anyone on school property, or at school sponsored events like football games.
The new rule covers whatever the board determines is inappropriate. That includes girls wearing low-cut shirts or skirts. Violators do not have to be students to be thrown out of events.
Board members say it is a move to raise the standards of the whole school district.
"All pants, including jeans must be fitted at the waist and must not be baggy or oversized," school board attorney Pete Fletcher read from the new rule.
School officials complained for years that poorly dressed students give the schools a bad image.
For that reason, the Student Services Committee passed a new rule giving school staff the power to remove anyone not meeting dress standards from school property and events.
"We have had problems [voiced by] the various teachers and this is what they wanted," said Eloise Curtis, District 2 Board Member.
The rule sparked a hot debate among board members in Tuesday night’s committee meeting.
Although they disagreed about the specifics, every member agreed the new dress rule is a much needed change.
"It raises standards of schools and values and everything," said District 4 Board Member Barbara Pulliam.
The new dress rule won't be official until the full school board approves it next Tuesday. It is expected to easily pass.
