AIKEN, S.C. - South Carolina has one of the highest criminal domestic violence rates in the country.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is trying to reduce that number, with
this week's most wanted list.

Seven of the ten people on this week's list are wanted for criminal domestic violence in Aiken County.

In the last few years lawmakers have toughened penalties for domestic violence offenders since the state has such high rates. The state now mandates that when a deputy goes to a home and either sees evidence of domestic violence or is told about threats of violence they must arrest the suspect.

There is absolutely no option even if the victim says they don't want to press charges.

"Sometimes when we arrive a victim says she just wants to file a report and not have an arrest made. That's not her choice. That's not our choice. State legislation mandates when these two circumstances exist we are mandated to make an arrest," Corporal Larry Schrade said.

What a joke, it is a good law but the sheriff enforcing it sucks, what about his hunting buddy that he wanted the cdv charges dropped for so they could go hunting together.
