WARRENVILLE, S.C. – Aiken County investigators are looking for the person who beat a Warrenville man to death.

Investigators say a caretaker found John Barrs, 68, in his home on Springwood Loop in Warrenville Friday morning.

"It's something I won't ever forget, seeing somebody dead, it's a shock, I mean, it really is," said Joseph Warren, neighbor.

Warren lives next door to Barrs and was one of the first people on the crime scene.

"It looked like somebody beat him real bad, because his face was all messed up. It didn't even look like him,” Warren said.

Warren ran to his neighbors home after he heard the caretaker scream.

"I came in and tried to keep her from falling or anything,” Warren said.

Neighbors say they are surprised that a murder happened on their street.

"There's no sense in it, especially an old man like that, he can't defend himself,” said Steve Zorn, neighbor.

The Aiken County coroner says Barrs died from blunt force trauma after being hit in the head with an unknown weapon.

"He was a nice fella he'd do anything for anybody," Warren said.

Warren and his neighbors say they hope police catch whoever killed Barrs soon.

"It's sad, it’s real sad,” Warren said.

Aiken County investigators are still looking for leads in what they're calling a homicide investigation.

If you have any information regarding this case contact the Aiken County Sheriff's Office at (803) 642-1761.
