AUGUSTA, Ga. - Thanksgiving is Thursday and while some will be dining at home, others will gather at the Augusta Rescue Mission.
The executive director tells NBC Augusta 26 News while donations are great, this Thanksgiving feast wouldn't possible without the help of volunteers.
It's something Dorian King is a pro at; de-boning a turkey for Thanksgiving.
But this year she's not doing it for her family.
"My family is not in town so I go help somebody else have a nice Thanksgiving,” said King.
King is one of many volunteers donating their time on Thanksgiving Day at the Augusta Rescue Mission.
"As a nonprofit, all nonprofits need the support of the community," said Executive Director Rusty Marsh.
With a slow economy, Marsh says the community hasn't donated as much this Thanksgiving.
"We kind of dug out of our funds this year. Normally we have lots of donations that come," said Marsh.
Marsh says despite the lack of donations, people are giving something else, themselves.
"We have had a big response of volunteers. If you don't have the money, volunteer the time," said Marsh.
The dining room at the mission may be empty now but Thursday it will be filled with hundreds of people having a Thanksgiving meal they otherwise wouldn't have thanks to the help of volunteers.
"The community comes in, prepares the meals; they serve the tables. They actually deliver meals," said Marsh.
"I've been doing it for ten years and it feels good every year to know that there's somebody having a nice Thanksgiving Day," said King.
Although the Augusta Rescue Mission has volunteers, they say they could always use more.
If you'd like to donate your time call (706) 722-2058.
The Thanksgiving meal will be Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Augusta Rescue Mission. It's located at 526 Walker Street in downtown Augusta.
