The groundhogs emerged this morning with mixed predictions for the arrival of spring.

The most famous Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow this morning. This means six more weeks of winter. Tradition holds that Phil has never been wrong.

General Beauregard Lee, of the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, GA, emerged from his plantation veranda this morning and did not see his shadow. This means an early spring! Beau has been honored for the accuracy of his predictions by the National Weather Service and holds an honorary doctorate in Weather Prognostication from the University of Georgia.

Since the groundhogs offer differing opinions, we'll err on the side of science: The official forecast from the Climate Prediction Center calls for above temperatures for early February-March-April. This implies an early spring.

Bottom line: Spring arrives on-time March 20 with above average temperatures for February-March-April.
