Tomatoes cleared in salmonella investigation

It's now safe to resume eating tomatoes. The Food and Drug Administration lifted a warning on certain types of tomatoes Thursday, even though it still can't say what's causing a salmonella outbreak among more than 1,000 Americans. The FDA put out its warning that certain tomatoes were possibly behind hundreds of cases of salmonella poisoning in early June. The salmonella outbreak had actually started in April, and since then more than 1,200 people in 42 states have fallen ill. Over 200 were hospitalized, and it may have contributed to two deaths in Texas. Now scientists at the Centers for Disease Control say the number of cases has been on the downswing for more than a month, and they still haven't found any evidence it was the tomatoes. Now the focus has shifted to hot peppers, specifically jalapenos and serranos. The FDA is sending inspectors to Mexico to investigate a packing house that receives peppers from a number of farms.
