Dogs are often called "Man's Best Friend." But the dogs at the Waynesboro Animal Shelter have some unlikely friends of their own.

Burke County inmates are making a difference by helping with the upkeep of the shelter.

Richard Daniels is the founder of the Old Fella County Animal Rescue. He also volunteers at shelter.

"We've been able to get a lot more accomplished in a short period of time, so it's a great help," said Daniels.

Overgrown brush piles are now clear and there’s fresh paint inside and outside. The upkeep doesn't stop there.

Daniels said, "Also, what the inmates do is every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, they come out here, they're cleaning up the pins, walking with the dogs, socialize with them."

It's not just the animals that benefit from this, the inmates enjoy it too.

"They love it and they can hardly wait until the next day to get here," said Staff Sergeant Larry Mack with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

One inmate said,” Once we get out of jail, it could help us get a job, we can come back here."

The Waynesboro Animal Shelter is also working with the Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue to find homes for their animals.
