Mayor accused of public corruption

By Associated Press

UNION, S.C. (AP)- The mayor and zoning administrator in the
South Carolina city of Union have been accused of public corruption.

U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins says Mayor Bruce Morgan was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday.

Wilkins says Morgan conspired with Zoning Administrator Jeffrey Lawson to accept kickbacks in return for doling out government contracts.

Lawson also was charged in the alleged scheme, which Wilkins said raked in $30,000 since it began in November 2007.

Morgan resigned several hours before he was indicted, citing personal reasons.

Morgan was first elected in 2000 and had been unopposed in his bid for re-election this fall.

Union is a town of about 9,000 residents about 70 miles northwest of Columbia.
