A traffic stop for littering ended with the arrest of a man wanted for murder in Aiken County. Police in Michigan arrested Koran Sapp Thursday night. He's been on the run since investigators say he shot and killed an Aiken teen in June 2007.
Mary Oakman says it's been more than a year, but the memory of Najee Preister collapsing in her front yard still haunts her.
“He said 'he shot me, he shot me' and I said why, he said 'I don't know why he shot me but he shot me,” said Oakman.
Priester told Oakman he was shot by Koran Sapp. Investigators say Priester was walking with a friend along Shenandoah Drive when the shooting happened.
Investigators say Sapp may have killed Priester in retaliation for a robbery involving one of Sapp's relatives. Oakman says she can still see Priester clinging to life.
“I've never seen nothing like that. You see it on TV but in real life it is something else,” she said.
But after more than a year on the run, Koran Sapp is behind bars. Thursday night Michigan state police arrested him.
“It is my understanding he was in a car at a traffic stop in another state and when they ran Mr. Sapp he came out of our agency wanted for murder,” said Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt.
Hunt says finding Sapp hasn't been easy since there were few leads and lack of cooperation from witnesses about his whereabouts.
“When he committed the crime he fled from the area pretty fast, so we put out a nationwide manhunt for him and it paid off,” said Hunt.
Its relief that Oakman says is long overdue.
“I am just glad that he was caught and justice was done,” said Oakman.
Sheriff Hunt says if Sapp waves extradition, he could be back in the Aiken County Detention Center in the next few weeks.

This man was caught thanks in part to the quick thinking of my Husband. My husband had heard police sirens close by, then saw the suspect run out from between houses down the block. He called 911 and ask if they were chasing someone and gave a description. The suspect had entered and was hiding in our neighbor's garage. This is were he was found by local and state police. Thank goodness for good guys looing out for their neighborhood. My prayers to the victims family and friends.
