County in South Carolina trying to make English official language

By Associated Press

PICKENS, S.C. (AP)- A South Carolina county is trying to make English its official language as part of an ordinance that officials say will crack down on the hiring of illegal immigrants.

Pickens County Councilmen Randy Crenshaw said Wednesday that
people who come to the U.S. should learn the language.

Critics claim the ordinance targets Latinos and sends a hostile message to newcomers.

Pickens County council advanced the proposal on a 5-1 vote this week.

A final vote could take place next month.
