People from both sides of the Graniteville, Vaucluse and Warrenville incorporation referendum are having trouble staking their opinions.

Dozens of GVW voting signs are being stolen across the tri-city area, by opposing sides. The three Aiken County towns could soon become one, and the possible change is causing trouble.

Supporters say incorporation would make the community eligible for federal funding. Those against it say the change would mean more taxes.

Sharon McLaughlin is a vocal opponent of the GVW referendum and produces a monthly community newsletter.

“I don’t think they’ve given a very good vision of what this can be like,” said McLaughlin. “It just sounds like more government.“

From huge banners, to small yard signs, many residents are convinced their own neighbors are stealing their signs.

Elizabeth Powell had a sign in her yard run over by a vehicle and then stolen, but she was quick to have it replaced.

As a supporter of the GVW incorporation, Powell believes one large, unified city will be a profitable transition.

“My main point is to keep the towns and their history remaining the way they are— the same, so the people can make their own decisions,” said Powell.

People living in the area will vote on the GVW incorporation August 26.

You folks need to consolidate. Just look at Augusta and you will see all the benefits consolidation can bring. We went from a little city deep in debt to a large city/county deep in debt, I say that based on thetax increases this year and next.
