Thousands of police officers, soldiers and first responders are getting trained to protect our country in Georgia-Carolina.

The Government Training Institute or GTI’s headquarters have relocated to Denmark in Bamberg County. Their training facilities have relocated to Barnwell County.

“It's probably some of the toughest training these guys have been exposed to,” said President of GTI Chadd Harbaugh.

Training out of a real nuclear power plant, SWAT teams and other tactical operations forces perform live fire exercises so they can be prepared for real terrorist attacks.

“Tactical operators nationally must train for every possible contingency and this is a very possible, real life scenario where someone in a building of this design could be holding hostages,” said SLED Captain George Booth.

GTI’s new training facilities and headquarters will bring in more than 3,000 military and law enforcement personnel to the area each year and pump about $2 million into the economy.

While the economy will get a big boost, Harbaugh said you can’t put a price on safety and the experience officers and soldiers gain during the training.

“It's a real passion of mine,” says Harbaugh. “I don't want to lose anymore officers or soldiers.”

GTI’s new facilities will train soldiers from places as close as Georgia and as far away as Japan and the United Kingdom.
