Man convicted in carnival worker's death

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - One of four people charged with killing
a carnival worker at a North Charleston motel has been convicted of
murder.

A Charleston County jury deliberated about two hours Thursday
before finding Shawn Demetrius Phillips guilty of murder, armed
robbery and conspiracy in the 2006 shooting death of 48-year-old
Robert Vargo.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports sentencing has been
delayed for the 27-year-old Phillips. He potentially could give
testimony in the retrial of co-defendant Lennie Franklin Mickey,
whose May trial on the same charges ended in a hung jury.

Authorities say Phillips, Mickey and two women targeted Vargo,
who was working at the Coastal Carolina Fair.

Alana Ponce Niesen of North Charleston and Sandra Campbell
Barnes of Summerville also are charged with murder.
