Authorities form postal crimes task force in SC

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - It's time to crack down on postal
crimes. That's what federal authorities are planning to announce during
a news conference Thursday.

U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins says he will join with U.S. Marshal
Johnny Mack Brown and postal service officials to announce the
deputizing of eight local law enforcement officers.

The officers will be authorized to investigate financial crimes
and identity theft arising from postal violations.

The announcement comes after several South Carolinians pleaded
guilty to possessing stolen mail. On Tuesday, three Orangeburg men
pleaded guilty to forging stolen checks and then cashing them.

Early August, an Aiken County postal worker pleaded guilty to
pilfering money and gift cards from mail she opened.
