A center that helps abused people in Aiken County is asking for help, so it can stay open.

The Cumbee Center opened its doors in 1979. Yet, it has lost about $50,000 in grant money.

The center's director Kay Mixon says the community can't stand to lose the valuable resources it provides, like an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence.

That's why she is asking the city for money.

“Aiken County ranks number one in the state for child sexual abuse and that is not acceptable and if our center is not here when that police officer goes to that home and that woman needs to leave that home with her children because we have a law that says if she can't protect her children they will be removed from her which then adds more to foster homes,” Mixon said.

The center accepts donations at their llocation in Aiken.
