Mother, daughter sentenced to prison for tax fraud

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A Greenville woman and her daughter have
been sentenced to prison for trying to defraud the Internal Revenue
Service of nearly $400,000.

U.S. District Judge Henry Herlong on Monday sentenced 45-year-old Martha Vernon to nearly four years in prison and her daughter, 29-year-old Tiffany Dunbar, to nearly three years in prison.

The Greenville News reported a federal indictment stated the women filed false tax returns from 2004 to 2006 using names and Social Security numbers that Dunbar stole from her employer.

Prosecutors say the women received nearly $189, 000 in fraudulent tax refunds and tried to have nearly $397,000 wired into their account.

Vernon's attorney, Lora Collins, told Herlong that Vernon had gotten involved with a man released from prison who told her and her daughter how to conduct the scheme.
