Woman who shot herself at SC hospital dies

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The patient at a Columbia hospital who
shot herself in the head after grabbing a prison officer's gun has
died.

Palmetto Health spokeswoman Tammie Epps says the woman died
Thursday around 5 p.m. The woman's name has not been released.

Authorities said the woman took the gun from a Department of
Corrections officer who was at the hospital with an inmate. The
woman had been in critical condition after the shooting Tuesday
night.

Columbia police spokesman Brick Lewis said the woman neither
injured nor threatened anyone else.

The Department of Corrections is reviewing its policies for
inmate transfers to hospitals. The hospital has also agreed to
create a separate waiting area for inmates.
