COLUMBIA, S.C. & ATLANTA (AP) - Gasoline prices are surging again across Georgia and South Carolina despite reports that Hurricane Ike inflicted minimal damage to oil installations on the Texas coast.

According to AAA's fuel gauge report, the average Georgia price for regular unleaded is $4.16 a gallon. That's a 16 cent increase from Sunday.

In South Carolina, a gallon of regular unleaded was $4.12 on Monday.
The previous record before the gas shortages caused by Hurricane
Ike was $3.91 in July.

The average gas price in the Augusta-Aiken area is $4.39. That's higher than the average in both states.

Crosby says AAA Carolina is also receiving reports of scattered
stations out of gas, but says supply shouldn't be a serious problem.

Crosby says prices should begin going down and supplies improve
by next week. Until then, he recommends taking fewer trips and
driving slower on the highway.

I HEAR IN COLUMBIA,SC GAS STATIONS ARE OUT OF GAS AND SOME HAVE LIMITS ON WHAT CAN BE PURCHASED. APPROACHING $5.00 A GALLON. IS SC, GA, AND NC THE ONLY STATES HAVING A PROBLEM WITH GAS STATIONS RUNNING OUT OF GAS? MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE CHECKING OUT THESE STATES!

I don't like the high gas prices just as much as you, but this is just how economics works. If the supply goes down and the demand goes up, then so do the gas prices.

I do not drive a car,but my husband and my son does, and I realized that the gas is going up gradually. Walmart gas is 4.99 a gallon on Augusta Road in South Carolina, and some gas station is out of gas. There are some gas station on Airport Blvd. that is much cheaper. I strongly feel that the gas is going to increase at a higher rate than usually. We have to take our children to school everyday, people that is in the same categories is going to experince some hardships. The price of food higher

In the Valdosta, GA area gas hit over $5.50 per gallon at some locations this weekend - appears to be losts of opportunists in our area where prices varied up to $1.25 per gallon from station to station. Makes me sick.

The Oil Industries are the only ones that can turn off their equipment and the price of fuel goes up. We did not run out of fuel, there is no shortage, they just turned off their pumps. What if the next time you go to the hospital and they tell you "We are about to close the E.R. for the evening so we are going to raise our rates. If you can afford to stay,we will treat you. If not, good luck." They've got it and we need it. That's what feeds greed in America. That needs to change.

JUST ANOTHER WAY TO STICK IT TO THE LOW INCOME PEOPLE. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS HAPPENS EVERYTIME AND IT HAPPENS BEFORE FOLKS KNOW IF ANY DAMAGE WAS DONE OR NOT. I MEAN $5.00 A GALLON (OR MORE IN SOME PLACES) IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG !! THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD STEP IN INSTEAD OF JUST SAYING "REPORT SUSPECTED PRICE GOUGERS". ALLOW AN INCREASE TO A CERTAIN POINT UNTIL THEY KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHAT DAMAGE HAS OR HAS NOT BEEN DONE.
