NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. β There were plenty of deals in the stores Friday, but none of them compared to the special being offered by the state of South Carolina.
Friday and Saturday, all guns in South Carolina will be sold tax free because of a new law starting this year.
"It's a tax free holiday that the South Carolina Senate setup to honor the second amendment," said Guns and Things store manager, David Byers.
South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford vetoed the gun tax holiday when it first passed the general assembly, but lawmakers overrode that veto and the holiday became law.
"For the last three months I decided to hold off on purchasing this particular handgun until now," said shopper Dan Smith.
Smith completed his normal Black Friday shopping, buying clothes and electronics; a gun was the last thing he had to cross off his Christmas list.
For Byers and his gun store the business was booming from opening to close.
Although all gun accessories are still taxed, sales at the gun shop were about six times what they were this time last year according to Byers.
Harold Heath and his son just bought a new handgun.
"That's a good discount when you go tax free,β said Heath. βIt's just like getting ready for school with the kids and buying their stuff. I guess this is my kid stuff."
Harold and his son are planning to go out for some target practice next week.
"This is big gun country down here in the South. If you don't have a gun down here something is wrong,β said Heath
