AIKEN, S.C. - It was a cold, rainy Sunday in Aiken County. At the sheriff’s office friends and colleagues mourned the loss of Lieutenant Michael Frank. He was killed in a car accident Saturday at mile marker 132 in Greene County, Ga.

“The witness behind Lieutenant Frank said no brake lights came on he veered off and struck a guard rail,” said Sheriff Michael Hunt, Aiken County.

For 13 years Frank was the Public Information Officer for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

“Mike was an asset to this department and a true professional,” Hunt said.

“He was a perfectionist at whatever job he did and he was super at it,” Ed Cordes said.

Frank also worked as an off ice official for the Augusta Lynx. Cordes, was his supervisor. He said it was a job and a passion for Frank.

“Other than his family and his job with Aiken County his next best love was playing hockey,” Cordes said.

Frank was leaving a hockey game in Atlanta and headed to a Lynx game in Augusta when the accident happened.

“He was on the way to the Lynx game that was his destination to see his son,” said Hunt.

Frank's son is a mascot for the Lynx. Hunt says his biggest concerns are Frank's two children.

“The initial thought is we're going to have to go take care of Michael's kids,” Hunt said.

Both Cordes and Hunt say they will miss the man who, for all his professionalism, also knew how to have a good time.

“He was a super individual. He was very fun to be around. Great sense of humor,” Cordes said.

“We always had a tie contest which usually I think I won so Mike was just a good stand up guy. He was professional when he needed to be and behind the scenes he could cut up like everyone else. We're just going to miss him. That's the bottom line,” Hunt said.

Frank also worked as a television news reporter in Augusta.

A witness of the car accident says it looked like Frank fell asleep at the wheel. Sheriff Hunt says he does not want to speculate, but says that could be a possibility.
