Trooper acquitted of civil rights charge suing for his legal fees

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A white South Carolina state trooper acquitted of a civil rights charge after he struck a fleeing black suspect with his patrol car is suing state Attorney General Henry McMaster over his legal fees.

A lawyer for Steven Garren said Tuesday the state should have paid for Garren's defense after the June 2007 crash, which was captured on video.

Attorney Wally Fayssoux (FAY-sue) says Garren may end up owing
up to $90,000.

He says the defense was especially expensive because federal prosecutors have an almost unlimited budget and flew in experts from across the county.

Garren was acquitted in October.

A spokesman for McMaster did not immediately return a phone
message.

Garren is back working for the Highway Patrol.
