Trooper acquitted of civil rights charge suing for his legal fees
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A white South Carolina state trooper acquitted of a civil rights charge after he struck a fleeing black suspect with his patrol car is suing state Attorney General Henry McMaster over his legal fees. A lawyer for Steven Garren said Tuesday the state should have paid for Garren's defense after the June 2007 crash, which was captured on video. Attorney Wally Fayssoux (FAY-sue) says Garren may end up owing He says the defense was especially expensive because federal prosecutors have an almost unlimited budget and flew in experts from across the county.
