NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – Wednesday hundreds said goodbye to Lt. Michael Frank. The Public Information Officer for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office died in a car accident last weekend.
“I stand here before you today with a heavy heart to mourn the loss of Michael Frank but I also stand before you with great pride to celebrate his life,” said Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt.
Before laying him to rest, Frank's family, friends and colleagues gathered to remember him.
He worked for the Aiken County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He also worked as a television reporter in Augusta and as a hockey official. But there was another job he cherished most of all.
“While many of you knew him as lieutenant or the night beat reporter or the man in the stripes to us he was just dad,” said Frank’s daughter, Tara.
She shared her fondest memories of her father.
“The laughs, the dances in our underwear, the car rides to school, the soccer games, the road trips, the embarrassing dances, the Frank call in the middle of Wal-Mart, and the snoring at the other end of the hall,” said Tara.
Larry Hendry, who knew Frank for more than a decade, shared his own memories. Both men loved hockey and were off ice officials for the Augusta Lynx.
“We probably did several hundred games together in fact we did so many games together that we were given the name frick and frack by the Augusta Lynx,” said Hendry.
Sheriff Hunt reminded everyone of Frank's lighter side when remembering their tie competition.
“He gives me this package and says Merry Christmas. So I open it up and it's a shirt and a nice tie and I say thank you Mike and he says I know you were having a hard time keeping up with me so I wanted to help you,” said Hunt.
Tara also shared the last moments she spent with her father and how she and her brother Tip will carry on.
“The last time I saw my dad was Thanksgiving Day when I took him a pumpkin pie. As I left that day my Dad said, ‘I love you doodle bug. I'll see you later.’ Today Tip and I aren't saying goodbye, we're just saying see ‘ya Dad. Thanks Dad. We'll take it from here,” she said.
Lt. Frank was active in the hockey community. He officiated college hockey as well as professional games. He had just finished officiating a game in Atlanta and was on his way to an Augusta Lynx game Saturday when his accident happened. His son, Tip, serves as one of the Lynx's mascots.
