BEECH ISLAND, S.C. - Highway 278 from Beech Island to Petticoat Junction was hit hard by a powerful storm Friday night. The National Weather Service says an EF-3 tornado ripped through parts of that area.

Saturday, NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with homeowners, some who were cleaning up the damages, others who had nothing left to clean.

“We knew the tornado was coming but we didn't know it was coming as far up as it came,” Sherry Miller said.

Friday night, that tornado came right to her front door and ripped her mobile home apart.

“The lights went off and we heard a big boom and we were kind of flipped over,” Miller said.

Then Miller, her husband and three kids were flipped out of the home.

“Thrown outside. I don't know how we were actually thrown but we were thrown outside,” she said.

The Miller family, all five of them, then ran into a hole and hid until the storm passed.

“All of us got down in there until we thought we were safe,” she said.

Unlike the Millers, Farrell Morgan was home alone when the tornado hit.

“All of a sudden I see these big pine trees I've got in my back yard and they're just whirling around,” Morgan said.

During the storm a tree fell and ripped a corner of Morgan's home off leaving a giant hole.

Along with dealing with this weekend’s storm damage Morgan is also preparing for a major event that is coming up next weekend.

“Oh, I'm supposed to get married next Saturday,” he said.

Steve Naglic of the National Weather Service was out on Highway 278 Saturday assessing the damages.

“This one we categorized as an EF-3 tornado based on all the damage we've seen up and down the highway and the buildings. Probably 150 mile an hour winds,” Naglic said.

They are winds that have robbed Miller of a home but not of what she says is most important to her.

“We could have died but we survived and that's the most important thing,” Miller said.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone who would like to help those who have been affected by the storm damage to call (803) 641-4152.

It is hard to see the town I grew up in devastated. We are blessed that not more people were injured, and It is amazing how our community has pulled together.
