NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Many South Carolinians say they are disappointed after hearing about the governor's year long affair with the woman in Argentina. But most say it's a personal issue that involves Mark Sanford and his family.
"I'm a bottom line kind of guy. I’ll lay it out. It's going to hurt, and we'll let the chips fall where they may," said Sanford.
Who would have thought Wednesday afternoon's press conference would reveal details of a year long affair Gov. Sanford had with a woman in Argentina.
"I voted for him, and I'm disappointed in him." said one South Carolina voter.
Rumors surfaced that the Governor's seven day disappearance was because of the stress from the past legislative session and his fight over the federal stimulus package. But instead, he spent Wednesday asking forgiveness from not just his family, but also from the people of South Carolina.
"I want to apologize to anybody who lives in South Carolina for the way I let them down on that front," said Sanford.
He also vowed to spend the rest of his term making amends.
"It doesn't begin at just the family level, but the family level of South Carolina. That means me going one by one, town by town to talk to a lot of old friends about what I’ve done and asking for their forgiveness."
“That would be between him and wife. People have problems and they work them out. That would be between him and his family. But you do have to hold people like that to different standard then you do normal people.
Are you shocked as a voter, or do you think this is that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things?
No, I think it isn’t, in the grand scheme of things. He should have some private time if he’s having an affair. Clinton had an affair. John F. Kennedy had an affair. There are a lot of presidents that had affairs and they were great leaders.
Sanford is serving his second term, which will end in 2010.
