MCCORMICK, S.C. - A deputy is in the hospital after a shooting in McCormick County.

McCormick County Sheriff's deputies responded to a disturbance at a home on Presidents Drive at 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Shortly after arriving shots were fired. One of the deputies, Robert Rushton, was hit. After a standoff between the suspect and the remaining deputies, the suspect was taken into custody.

NBC Augusta 26 News has learned he was hired by the McCormick County Sheriff's Office a few weeks ago.

Before taking the job, Rushton was serving in Iraq.

The suspect is in the McCormick County Detention Center.
