SC releases annual list of best, worst charities

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned children leads South Carolina's annual "Scrooges and Angels'' list.

Secretary of State Mark Hammond released Wednesday the 14th annual report on the 10 best and worst charities collecting money in South Carolina.

Pendleton Place Inc. put 95 percent of its collections toward caring for the children.

"Scrooges'' have many complaints filed against them and spend a
lot of money on professional fundraisers rather than volunteers.

They include the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund, of Arlington, Va., which put just 14 percent of its collections toward its cause.

Hammond says he wants to protect the public against groups that take advantage of residents' giving spirit.
