A change in gender roles is evolving along with the faces of the careers.

For years, gender roles have been questioned on the big screen in movies like "Meet the Parents." But now, predominantly female dominated careers like nursing have some company.

"Hey, I'm Bruce. I'm the nurse. And they'll say you should be the doctor and I say no, I'm the nurse," MCGHealth nurse Bruce Ware said.

Ware is a registered nurse working inside MCGHealth's neurological intensive care unit.

"Gender was not a factor. I was looking for employment and nursing provided an avenue for that," Ware said.

A nurse since 1999, Bruce belongs to a small but growing minority.

A recent Vanderbilt University School of Nursing study found the number of male nurses in the United States has nearly doubled since the 1980's.

Today there are more than 160,000 male nurses, just like Bruce, working at hospitals across the country.

Just inside Bruce’s ICU, there's six male nurses compared to 30 female nurses.

"When I come to work, they treat me just like I'm one of them and I really mean, they treat me like I'm one of them," Ware said.

But it's not only men making the change. Alicia Cole changes oil and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty when you bring your car to a Columbia County Jiffy Lube.

"I'd seen other girls working and I figured if they can do it, I can do it," she said.

It was car trouble that originally brought Alicia to Jiffy Lube. She left with the repairs and a new job.

"I check the fluids. I check the oil and transmission. I fill up their tires with air. It's fun, it's different. It's something I'll be able to use the rest of my life so I like it," Cole said.

They're two vastly different careers, but they're two people breaking down barriers.

"There isn’t anything a guy can't do, that a girl can't do," Cole said.

"My number one job is to keep them alive. They have 12 hours with me and for those 12 hours, we're going to work together to stay alive," Ware said.

We have a young lady that works in our carreer field that is doing a very good job. She is a jet engine mechanic, which is primarily a "male" position. Her name is Shawna Boscino and she is employed by Standard Aero (formerly Landmark Aviation, formerly Garrett Aviation) here in Augusta.
