Thieves steal equipment worth $250,000 from Ft. Gordon

By Dustin Blanchard dblanchard@nbcaugusta.com

Richmond County investigator Kendall Brown says he saw two men unloading bags filled with metal pieces at Campbell's Recycling Center last week.

Marquette Mitchell and Omar Gavin were subcontractors at Ft. Gordon and the equipment came from base.

The men managed to sell $100,000 of the loot as scrap metal, but they only made $300! Now the two face serious charges.

"It's not so much the theft of these military items, but more operational security," said Richmond County Investigator Kendall Brown. "It could've been sold to anybody."

Army investigators are pursuing federal charges against the pair.
