Fire destroys historic hotel in North Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - The Palmetto House at 7 Gables in North Augusta burned to the ground late Thursday night. The fire started around 10:30 p.m. at the former Seven Gables Inn.

The business which serves as a banquet facility for private parties is located at the corner of Georgia and Butler avenues. Dozens of firefighters were called out to help get the fire under control.

Firefighters tell NBC Augusta no one was hurt and the fire did not threaten any other structures. There’s no word yet on what caused it.

The business recently reopened under the name Palmetto House.

It was originally built as the Palmetto Lodge in 1903 and hosted the Rockefellers and Firestones. It was also the private home of adventure novelist Edison Marshall, the author of Yankee Pasha: The Adventures of Jason Starbuck. It later became the Seven Gables Inn.

What a sad loss for North Augusta!!!!!! I thought that the place was absolutly beautiful!!!! I ate there on many occasions since they reopened and I enjoyed it everytime. I hope that Robin & Tara will bring something back to this spot and give North Augusta something that we need. My prayers are with all of you!!!

What a sad ending to a beautiful building. She was abused by man in the 80s as the Buffalo Room by being made to discriminate against Blacks, used as a drug dealing post, put up for sale for several years, and finally she was given a chance at a new life, to have it snuffed out so quickly. May she RIP.
