Widow: SC killer apologized for slaying husband

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - The widow of a man slain four years ago in
their Sumter County home says the man who pleaded guilty to killing
her husband and two others has apologized to her.

Mildred Tietjen testified Thursday that 27-year-old Stephen
Bryant had written her a letter saying that his actions were the
result of physical and sexual abuse suffered as a child.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Bryant in the
killing spree that happened over a week in October 2004.

Prosecutor Dudley Saleeby Jr. said earlier this week Bryant
stalked each of his victims, studying their houses while they were
at work.

The Item of Sumter reports that Solicitor Kelly Jackson on
Thursday asked the judge who will sentence Bryant to visit the
crime scenes.
