More than 50 people who live in an Augusta nursing home are being forced to find a new facility to care for them.
"The Place At Augusta" on Stevens Creek Road has made the decision to close its doors since its Medicare & Medicaid programs are being terminated based on a recent state inspection.
All residents must move out by October 13, 2008.
NBC Augusta received this statement from The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) about the closing:
1. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has notified The Place at Augusta, 820 Stevens Creek Road that based on an August 13 survey findings of noncompliance by the Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR), Office of Regulatory Services, its provider agreements to participate in Medicare & Medicaid programs will be terminated at midnight on September 13, 2008.
2. Medicare & Medicaid payments for residents admitted prior to September 13 may continue for up to 30 days in order to facilitate the orderly transfer/relocation of residents.
3. The Place at Augusta had a history of poor compliance with regulatory requirements. The August 13 survey findings demonstrate that the facility has failed to make significant improvement in meeting program requirements. Some of the deficiencies include resident neglect and not following care plans that resulted in harm to residents such as pressure sores.
4. DHR, through its Relocation Team will provide assistance to residents and family members in identifying alternative placements and will work with facility staff to assist in the relocation process.
Despite the state’s findings, residents told NBC Augusta they like it there.
"It's very stressful, I don't want to see my dad leave from here," said Margaret Hyder.
Family members say it’s just not fair.
"It wasn't like we got this big notice or something. We got a letter in the mail, they're closing the doors and that all these people need to be out by October 13," Hyder.
June Lunsford's husband is also a resident at The Place.
She said he considers it his second home and having to move would be devastating.
"I know I'm upset talking about it. He's happy here, I don't know what he's gonna do when I tell him he's gonna have to go somewhere else. He's going to hate it, I know it," said Lunsford.
In a letter to residents and family members, the administrator for The Place stated "a relocation team will be established to assist residents and their family members to find appropriate placement to meet each individuals needs."
But the residents said they don't want to move away to an unfamiliar place.
“They treat me right; everything seems to be going right. I don't know why they're gonna shut us down and kick us out," said resident Steven Fergeson.
"It's a family when we all get together. It's a good time," said resident Virginia Lewis.
This isn't the first time The Place has had problems. In November 2007, NBC Augusta told about it ranking as one of the worst nursing homes in the country. The Place made improvements and came off that list earlier this year.
