McCormick, S.C. - Investigators are looking to see if there's a connection between counterfeit money used in Edgefield and McCormick counties.
Two times in one day a group of young men used fake $100 bills at the same store off of Highway 28 in McCormick County; the first time they were successful, but the second time they weren't so lucky.
Edith Bussey has owned and worked Bussey's for 31 years and this is the first time she's seen something like this.
“The guy comes in right after the guy orders the chili dog, starts getting candy, puts it on the counter, hands me a counterfeit, I take it, give him change. At the time, I didn’t look at it close enough, I didn’t recognize it was counterfeit,” Morgan Bussey Jr. said about his experience working at the store Tuesday afternoon.
A couple hours later the same men tried again, but this time Morgan Bussey’s mother Edith, the store owner was working.
“I told him I knew it was counterfeit, I picked up the phone, he hit the door and they took off,” Edith Bussey said.
Edith Bussey says the man who tried to fool her with the counterfeit came in, walked to the back, grabbed three sprites, asked for a pack of cigarettes and slapped down a fake $100 bill.
“I looked at it you could tell immediately it was counterfeit, so I called the law.”
The men who tried using counterfeit money at Bussey's haven't been caught but, McCormick County Sheriff's Office is investigating the situation and checking to see if there's a connection between the use of this counterfeit money and last week’s use.
Kristopher Morgan and Keith Brand were arrested last Thursday for trying to use a $100 bill at two local stores off Highway 25 in Edgefield County.
“What we have to do when we get a counterfeit is turn it into the Secret Service,” said Chief Deputy of McCormick County Sheriff’s Office CE Gable Jr.
Chief Deputy Gable also said if you get counterfeit money through a transaction, then the best thing to do is turn it in, although you may be out $20 to $100 in cash.
