AUGUSTA, Ga - The U.S. Geological Survey has obtained new funding for the gauge at Butler Creek on the Savannah River. The river gauge is fully operational with no loss of data.
Eric Strom, Director of the U.S. Geological Survey South Carolina Water Service Center, informed us this afternoon that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has agreed to become the new funding partner for at least the next 18 months.
The annual cost to maintain and operate the gauge is $15,000 and was previously shared by USGS and the South Carolina Department Of Natural Resources (SCDNR). Strom says that SCDNR had to end the cost-sharing agreement due to budget constraints.
Some sort of gauge has been in place at this location since 1796. For real-time information from the gauge, click here.
