Brain deformity discussed in Stephen Stanko trial
CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) - The Stanko trial continued over the weekend as defense attorneys tried to prove Stanko has a deformed brain that makes him insane. The frontal lobe of the human brain, which regulates impulsive behavior, judgment, maturity, and moral assessment has been the subject of several tests on Stanko. Expert witnesses called by the defense said Stanko's frontal lobe is abnormal. Stanko has "significant impairment in detecting right from wrong and controlling his impulses," said Dr. Joseph Wu, an expert on psychiatric disorders and brain scanning. In contrast, during cross examination, Dr. Mark Einhorn said most of his tests on Stanko done while he was in prison came back fine. Stanko did not take the stand Sunday in his defense, and the defense rested its case. Stanko was arrested in Augusta in April 2005, after fleeing the Grand Strand area where he was charged with two murders and rape. Stanko was convicted and sentenced to death in 2006 of killing his ex-girlfriend and raping a teenage girl. The current trial is to determine whether Stanko killed a 74-year-old Horry County man before he fled to Augusta. NBC Augusta 26 News (WAGT) contributed to this report.
