ATHENS, Ga. (AP) _ Georgia signed 19 football recruits Wednesday--
all considered by Bulldogs coaches to be A-list prospects.
After losing only six seniors and two underclassmen from his
2004 team that went 10-and-2, coach Mark Richt had room for only
eight in-state signees, in part because he had so much success out
of state.
Richt signed three Parade magazine high school All-America picks
-- defensive tackle Kade Weston of Red Bank, New Jersey, and
Charlotte, North Carolina, teammates Joe Cox and Mohamed Massaquoi.
He also signed the Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina,
safety C.J. Byrd of North Augusta.
Eleven of Georgia's 19 signees are from outside Georgia, an
unusual ratio for a program that normally leans heavily on in-state
players. Richt said three straight seasons with 10 or more wins has
generated more national attention for Georgia, which led to more
national recruits.
Some other highly recruited out-of-state players in the class
are receiver-defensive back Jamar Bryant of Hamlet, North Carolina,
cornerback Bryan Evans of Jacksonville, Florida, and defensive
tackle Jeff Owens of Sunrise, Florida.
Georgia's class of signees is ranked in the top 10 by most
national recruiting experts.
One of Georgia's top in-state signees, linebacker Darius
Dewberry of Peach County High School, has said he will attend
Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia before trying to meet the
university's academic requirements in 2006.
Other top in-state signees include two Douglass High players
from Atlanta -- defensive end Roderick Battle and defensive tackle
Brandon Sesay.
