NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP)- Newberry College plans to go without a nickname next year as the school searches for a possible replacement for its ``Indians'' name that has come under fire from the NCAA.

The (Columbia) State newspaper reported Wednesday that trustees
made the decision last week.

School leaders were to discuss the decision later Wednesday.

Newberry had been on the NCAA's list of schools that could have
faced penalties for using nicknames or mascots considered offensive.

The school had reached an agreement with the NCAA in November 2006, giving Newberry two years to compete in NCAA championships without penalty for use of the nickname or arrowhead and spear logos.
