Steve Spurrier Says

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) _ Steve Spurrier says he is putting together a
film of plays that have cost South Carolina close games. The Gamecocks coach wants his team playing with the effort and
intelligence it takes to pull out more of those this season. He
says the team has the talent now, and the players and coaches both
need to make sure they get the most out of it.

Spurrier spoke at Southeastern Conference media days Friday in
suburban Birmingham. He praised apparent starting quarterback Tommy Beecher and said he will get a full chance to end the team's recent revolving door at the position.

Spurrier also is hoping new defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson can help improve a defense that has struggled. Spurrier said he isn't sure of the status of quarterback Stephen Garcia, who is on a university suspension.
