Reese Hoffa is one of eight children of Steve and Vicki Hoffa as the Olympic Games began on 8-8-08, the stars do all seem to be lining up.
At the home of Steve and Vicki Hoffa in Harlem, Georgia the signs are everywhere wishing son Reese well in Beijing where he is a favorite to strike gold.
He’s been the best shot putter in the world the past two years. So just how hungry is Reese Hoffa? “He is as hungry as a man could get and he’s just driven right now and it’s all he thinks about,” says Reese’s dad Steve.
Adopted by Steve and first wife Cathy when Reese was just a boy it was not long before Reese’s athletic prowess could be seen at Lakeside High School where he was an all around sports star.
“He always told me my salary would go up if he moved me to fullback because he could really run the ball,” said Reese’s former football coach Steve Crislip.
Three state championships in track earned Reese a scholarship to the University of Georgia and it was there after one of many exhaustive Internet searches he made contact with his birth mother and another piece of the puzzle in Hoffa’s life fell into place.
“If there's any time Reese will win gold it's now and as you said everything is in place,” said Reese’s father.
His coach went on to say, “He's got so much confidence, just watching him on TV."
This high octane Hoffa is changing the face of his sport in an event that had never seen this type of exposure. His father says that’s changed because Reese is a showman.
His coach agrees, “Now Reese Hoffa is the one that runs around with the chicken bone, that's the one, so he's developed a following.”
As this story unfolds Reese is just one of two Hoffa boys fighting for Team USA this week. His younger brother Chris is in Iraq and also schedule to come home shortly after the Olympics.
