In just his second season at Williston-Elko Dwayne Garrick guided the Blue Devils all the way to the State Championship game. Awaiting them in Orangeburg was a Scotts Branch team that beat Blackville-Hilda 24-22 in the semi-finals.
This one was an instant classic. Williston would get on the board in the first quarter when Dexter Staley scored from 6 yards out. The Blue Devils would however miss the extra point to take a 6 nothing lead.
It would stay that way until late in the 4th quarter when Quentin Singleton scored for Scotts Branch to tie the game at 6. Now the Eagle don't have a field goal kicker so they would be forced to go for 2, but the Williston defense would step up as Darryl Salley made a goal line tackle to keep the game tied at 6.
Williston would get the ball with about 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter and it looked like they would drive right down the field. Dexter Staley rattled off 25 yards on the third play of the drive to get to Scotts Branch territory, but on a 4th and 1 play Staley would put it on the ground. Scotts Branch would recover with about 2 minutes left in regulation.
They would take advantage as Quentin Wilson would go 38 yards on a 4th and 1 play to give the Eagles the 12-6 lead. They would go for 2 and convert to take a 14-6 lead with about a minute left in the 4th quarter.
The Blue Devils would get one last shot but Tamyn Garrick would be picked off by Johnny Wilson as Scotts Branch wins a thriller, 14-6 the final.
