Lakeside Football Coach Out As Athletic Director

By NBC Augusta Reporters

Lakeside High School football coach Jody Grooms has agreed to step down as the school's athletic director. This comes after he called for an illegal play during a recent game.

The agreement was announced after a closed door session at the Columbia County Board of Education Meeting Tuesday night. According to board member Mike Sleeper, Grooms is still the head football coach at the school but could face further repercussions by the end of the week.

Grooms ran the illegal play earlier this month in a game against Effingham County. A video of the game shows a Lakeside player run off the field and another player run onto the field 40 yards down field.

Superintendent Charles Nagle says it could take him several days to make a decision about punishment for the coach.

The Georgia High School Association fined Lakeside High School $250.
