Augusta, GA – The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 37-18) won their seventh straight game over the Lexington Legends (21-48, 19-36) with a 14-2 win on Sunday. Starter Scott Barnes recorded the win while Thomas Neal drove in three runs and finished 5-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs.
The GreenJackets jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on a one-out RBI single from Neal for a 1-0 lead. Augusta increased the lead to 4-0 after three innings getting an RBI single from Elio Sarmiento in the second inning and in the third inning an RBI single from Dayton Buller and an RBI double from Andrew Davis.
That’s all Barnes (2-1) would need as the lefty worked 5.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits. Barnes walked two and struck out six. Augusta increased the lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning on another one-out RBI single from Neal, his third hit of the game.
Lexington broke up the shutout and no-hitter in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Jacob Priday with one out. The Legends got their second run in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI triple from Brian Pellegrini to chase Barnes from the game.
Augusta made it 6-2 in the sixth inning on Neal’s fourth hit of the game, a one-out RBI single. The GreenJackets blew it open in the seventh inning scoring eight runs and sending 12 batters to the plate. The inning started with a solo homer from Garrett Baker for a 7-2 lead. James Simmons had an RBI double then Shane Jordan followed reaching on an RBI fielder’s choice as Lexington missed an out at home. Angel Villalona capped off the scoring in the frame with a one-out, grand-slam to left field for 14-2 lead, his second grand-slam of the season.
