Forecast Discussion

Another round of heavy rain is expected today thanks to a persistent southwest flow aloft bringing moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and pockets of energy across Georgia and the Carolinas. The focus for heaviest rain will likely be south of I-20. Another inch of rain is likely, mainly before 4pm. We expect a lull in the rain tonight with more dense fog likely.

A strong cold front will approach from the west late Friday afternoon. Instability increases ahead of this front as we expect temperatures to rise well into the 70s over eastern Georgia and western South Carolina. Energy aloft will combine with warm surface air to provide at least a small chance for some severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and early evening. One limiting factor may be storms that develop in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico early Friday. This typically robs our area of moist air and would limit the chance for severe weather.

Even though the surface cold front will move east of the region by early Saturday morning, low pressure aloft will remain west of us, and this will create plenty of clouds and a steady breeze on Saturday. All the rain will be east of the region by 7am, but sunshine will be limited on Saturday.

High pressure begins to move into the area Sunday and will remain over the deep Southeast through Tuesday. Dry weather and temperatures a little below normal are expected.

The next storm system to affect the Southeast may end up staying to the south of us on Wednesday and Thursday.

Don't forget to spring ahead to Daylight Saving Time Sunday at 2am. Shift your clocks ahead 1 hour before you go to bed Saturday night.
