Augusta's June rainfall record is impressive, but only for the lack of rain the area experienced as the drought of 2007-08 continued to worsen.
At Augusta Regional Airport, the official weather reporting station for Augusta, only 0.89" of rain was recorded for the month of June. The normal rainfall for June in Augusta is 4.19".
Checking records dating back to 1951 at Augusta Regional Airport, NBC Augusta found that June 2008 was the second driest June on record during the past 57 years. The driest occurred in 1984, with only .68" of rain.
1986, 1990, and 1993 round out the top five driest months of June in Augusta. Ironically, June is historically known as a month of downpours in Augusta. During many of the past 57 years, some June rainfall records showed amounts in excess of 7 inches. Flash flooding is also a common event during June, but rain was hard to come by in 2008.
At the NBC Augusta studio in downtown Augusta, the rainfall total for this June reached 3.72", with the bulk of the rain occurring just three days out of the month. Augusta's Daniel Field Airport only reported .84" for the month. Steve Czaikowski, a weather observer at Twin Lakes Airport near the Aiken-Edgefield County line, reported a total of 2.55" for the month.
The official rainfall deficit for 2008 at Augusta Regional Airport is already approaching six inches. The total rainfall deficit for 2007 was 10.67", and the 2006 deficit was 3.61".
