AUGUSTA, Ga. - 2009 is starting dry for the Augusta area. Only 1.52 inches of rain fell at Augusta, Bush Field during the month of January. This makes this month the driest January since 1989 and the 7th driest January on record.

Since reliable weather records began in 1950 at Augusta, Bush Field, two decades were particularly dry during the month of January. Many of the top ten driest Januarys occurred during the 1950s. The 2000s have been similarly dry with January rainfall amounts generally averaging around two to three inches.
So far, the 2000s have brought five years of drought, including the years 2000-2002, and 2007-2008.
