AUGUSTA, Ga.- NBC Augusta Chief Meteorologist Jeff Rucker and weather forecasters Jay Jefferies and Rich Rogers went to work Saturday morning to provide severe weather education to about 25 of our NBC Augusta storm spotters at our studio in downtown Augusta.

Rucker gave an informative presentation on the tropics, specifically telling the group about the threat of tornadoes spawned by landfalling tropical storms and hurricanes. Spotters also learned about past hurricanes that have struck the Georgia coastline, a fairly rare, but historically deadly occurrence.

The meeting also focused on learning more about CoCoRaHS, a collaborative volunteer network of people reporting their daily rain gauge measurements. Many NBC Augusta storm spotters have purchased a National Weather Service approved rain gauge for the CoCoRaHS program, and are providing helpful information to help weather forecasters and citizens prepare for flash flooding.

The training session was open to current NBC Augusta storm spotters. NBC Augusta typically offers a severe weather certification class each year in late winter or early spring that is open to the general public.
