AUGUSTA, Ga. - With the first two tropical storms of the year, Ana and Bill, having formed in the Atlantic Ocean, NBC Augusta's StormTracker weather team held a meeting Saturday for our volunteer storm spotters.

Chief Meteorologist Jeff Rucker and weather forecaster Rich Rogers discussed the threats tropical storms and hurricanes may pose on our area.

Spotters were also urged to call in when there is bad weather in their area, especially during tropical weather events. That's because radar does not detect tornadoes as easily in tropical systems as it does in typical severe thunderstorms.

One spotter says he's had years of experience with tropical weather.

"I was down in south Florida for 40 years and so I experienced everything from Hurricane Andrew...It really goes back to Hurricane Cleo in 1965 all the way up to Hurricane Katrina and Wilma a couple of years back," said Paul Mazotas, NBC Augusta storm spotter.
