Survey Indicates EF-3 Tornado Hit West Georgia

By Jeff Rucker jrucker@nbcaugusta.com

The National Weather Service (NWS) conducted a storm survey this afternoon and found that at least two tornadoes, one a powerful EF-3, hit west Georgia early Tuesday morning.

The strong EF-3 tornado moved over Carroll County, Georgia at around 5:50am. The storm survey indicated the tornado began 13 miles west of Carrollton along the Alabama state line and traveled 8 miles east before lifting about 5 miles west of Carrollton.

The maximum width was 100 yards with maximum winds near 140mph. At least 12 structure, mostly homes, were damaged or destroyed with at least one person injured.

Another person was injured at around 6:15am as an EF1 tornado hit east of Carrollton. A NWS storm survey indicated that this weaker tornado remained on the ground for about two miles with a width of about  100 yards and a maximum wind speed of nearly 90mph. At least 24 structures were damaged. The one injury occurred when a tree fell on a car.

The two tornadoes were parts of a squall line of thunderstorms that moved over the Atlanta area between 6:30am and 8:00am causing widespread tree and power line damage. At one point, over 100,000 customers were without power over the state of Georgia.

This same line of storms weakened considerably before moving over metro Aiken-Augusta between 9am and noon.
