Tornado Rips Through Downtown Atlanta, Damaging Georgia Dome And CNN Center

By Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - A tornado ripped through downtown Atlanta Friday night, downing trees, breaking windows and tearing the roof of the Georgia Dome while the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament was in progress.

Numerous windows were broken at CNN Center during the storm, and there was also damage at nearby Philips Arena.

Georgia Power Co. spokeswoman Consuela Monroe said about 10,000
customers had lost power in the Atlanta area.

The National Weather Service had not determined if the storm was
a tornado, although a tornado warning had been issued for the area
a few minutes earlier.

The basketball game was halted, but resumed after a delay.
