Sanford Asks President To Declare SC Counties As Disaster Areas In Wake Of Tornadic Storms

COLUMBIA (AP)- South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has
asked President Bush to declare nine counties disaster areas after
tornadoes and other severe weather ravaged the state more than a
week ago.

Sanford says in a letter to Bush that the affected counties were
in rural, low-income areas with high unemployment rates, making
recovery efforts more difficult.

He says six of the nine counties fall below the state's average
median household income level and about 200 households would likely
qualify for federal loans.

Insurers say estimated damage in South Carolina from severe
weather March 15 is about $43 million.

The counties are Aiken, Allendale, Berkeley, Edgefield, Florence, Kershaw, Newberry, Orangeburg and Williamsburg.
